SCSI - Product Reviews

Ensuring that Serial Attached SCSI can meet the demands of the future marketplace is the primary goal of the SCSI Trade Association

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) must be able to rapidly respond to the evolving needs of mission-critical application environments. In order to enable SAS to grow in concert with the storage needs of mid-range and large data centers, the SCSI Trade Association (STA) has created an Advanced Connectivity Roadmap. This roadmap will preview which connectivity advances will support industry’s increasingly rigorous performance reliability and scalability requirements.

Harry Mason, President of STA and Director of Industry Marketing at LSI, commented, “Larger SAS deployments may support upwards of a thousand drives, require multiple levels of cascaded SAS expanders and often utilize centralized SAS switching elements. This level of SAS scaling demands more from SAS as a system-level interconnect. STA is advancing and standardizing SAS connectivity architecture to position SAS to meet the scalability needs of the targeted markets.”

A connectivity management system using a new converged Mini-SAS High-Density (HD) standard connectors, which are compatible with the next generation 12Gb/s SAS systems, support copper connections up to 20m and optical connections up to 100m. STA believes this new standard is the best way to make SAS flexible and scalable enough to meet the challenges of the future, which will provide organizations with the assurance of investment protection for their existing storage platforms.

Best-in-Class SCSI/SAS Providers:

  • Offer internal enclosures or “cages” for daisy-chaining
  • Offer expander embedded switches
  • Offer a range in number of bays

Top Considerations Before Selecting SCSI/SAS Provider:

A way to keep initial costs down while still providing for scalability is to use a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) infrastructure including host bus adapters (HBAs), backplanes, cabling, etc. and populate it with low-cost, high-capacity Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) drives. More SATA drives can be added to the system on an as-needed basis. SAS is not only much more versatile than a SATA infrastructure in terms of scalability, SAS can connect to more devices, up to 16,000 SAS and/or SATA drives in one domain.

Key Providers:

1. OpStor Multi-Vendor Storage Management provides monitoring and management of Windows servers like Windows 2000, 2003, 2008, 7, XP, NT and Vista in SAN and NAS. This infrastructure monitoring solution can identify SCSI/HBAs mounted on host servers, monitor CPU, memory utilization, disk space utilization and IO statistics on Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX and IBM AIX servers.  ZOHO Corporation says that ManageEngine’s OpStor storage management “constantly keeps track of resource availability and performance so that critical business applications that depend on storage infrastructure are not affected." The company hosts a number of websites which enable customers to discuss problems and share resolutions with each other.

2. The Promise VTrak 15200 iSCSI SATA RAID storage system is reported by Alacritech to have “The award-winning Alacritech SES1001T iSCSI Accelerator [which] is the industry’s top-performing iSCSI controller and is the only card to accelerate the full Microsoft iSCSI Software Initiator.” The SES1001 uses patented SLIC Technology to enable wire-speed performance and “significantly higher” transaction rates than those offered by other iSCSI cards. Alacritech Accelerators offload TCP/IP and iSCSI processing from the host CPU, thus improving host processor efficiency, increasing data throughput and reducing network latency.

3. The PS3700X uses storage pools and tiers matched to application demands to integrate with all other PS Series storage arrays.EqualLogic says “it maintains 99.999% application and data availability." The PS3800XV, for databases and online transaction processing applications, uses 15,000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk drives. These 146 GB SAS drives, on a 16 drive chassis, provide a 2.3 TB, high-performance iSCSI SAN built on fully redundant, hot-swappable enterprise hardware. Features are: automatic load balancing, snapshots and replication, multi-path I/O and consistency sets. The PS3900XV, also with 15,000 RPM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk drives and an a16 drive chassis, provide 300 GB SAS drives for a 4.8 TB, high-performance iSCSI SAN.

4. The ATTO FibreBridge 2400C/R/D is reported by ATTO Technology, Inc. as “the first 4-Gigabit fibre channel-to-Ultra320 SCSI bridge available on the market.” Other products from ATTO are: the ATTO iPBridge 2700C/R/D; the ExpressPCI UL4D which delivers up to 640MB/s data throughput; the ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D dual-channel Ultra320 host adapter which has data-transfer rates of up to 640MB/s and offers support for PCI Express interconnect – a high-speed (serial) bus interface; the ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D Low-Profile SCSI HBA which uses Ultra320 SCSI and PCI Express (PCIe) technology and has throughput of up to 320MB/s per channel for a combined speed of up to 640MB/s; and the ATTO Xtend SAN iSCSI initiator package for Macintosh OS X.

SCSI/SAS
Definition: With a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), which is a set of standards for physically connecting computers and peripheral devices and transferring data between them, up to 16 devices can be attached to a single bus. Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is a computer bus that moves data from hard drives and tape drives back and forth to computer storage devices. SAS, which uses the standard SCSI command set, depends on a point-to-point serial protocol that replaces the parallel SCSI bus technology.
